‘Is it Crime to be a Kashmiri’- Families of Three Budgam Men Arrested in Delhi Plead their Innocence

The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Monday arrested five “suspected militants” after an “encounter” with the police in Delhi’s Shakarpur area.

“The initial probe suggests that the five, two from Punjab and three from Jammu Kashmir, have links to Khalistan and Islamic terror organizations,” the Delhi Police claimed.

Three Kashmiri men who hailed from Central Kashmir’s Budgam district. They were identified as Reyaz Ahmed Rather and Shabir Ahmed Gojri, both residents of Nasrullah Pora and Muhammad Ayoub Pathan of Gondhipora village of Budgam.

As soon as the news of the arrest of the trip reached their homes back in Kashmir, the families plunged into mourning and anger pleading the innocence of their loved ones.

Neighbours in large numbers reached the houses of the trio to express solidarity with the families, People gathered in large numbers grieved the arrest of the three “innocents”.

A youth, Arif Hussain said that “Is it a crime to be a Kashmiri, why are Kashmiris being harassed every now and then? what have we done?”

He blamed the Indian media for creating an image of Kashmiris wherein it gets easy for anyone to harass Kashmiris without any accountability whatsoever. “They are innocent, We know how Delhi Police is, and How Delhi has been to Kashmiris” he said.

Revisiting his Delhi tour of 2017, he said he was disallowed to stay in a hotel merely for being a Kashmiri, “I was, after many requests, allowed to stay, however, they all saw me with suspicion, even when they had taken my identity proof, photos and everything else.”

When the news reached Mohammed Ayoub’s house, his daughter Iqra Jan crying the tears of pain, fell down unconscious and had to be shifted to a hospital for treatment.

The Elder sister of Mohammed Ayoub, Hajira begum told The Kashmiriyat over the phone that he went to Delhi to buy some required material for the construction of his house.

“We were eating food when we got this news from neighbour at around 1:00 PM. Since then, we are under extreme depression, we cannot come into terms with the allegations leveled against him,” Hajira said.

She said that the news has taken everyone by surprise and the while village and entire locality knows Ayoub, adding, “the Delhi Police is framing him in a fake case, he has no distant link whatsoever to Militancy.”

Naseema, the Wife of Mohammed Ayoub said that a local boy informed the family that Ayoub pathan had been arrested by Delhi Police on militant charges.

“When the news heard his daughters, they started wailing and one of his daughters fell unconscious at that moment,” Naseema told The Kashmiriyat.

The family members of the Mohammed Ayoob pathan, appealed the Governor led administration to Intervene and bring him back as early as possible.

Pertinently, Pathan is the father of 3 daughters and 2 sons, One of is sons is in police custody for his alleged involvement in Lawaypora militant attack in February this year.

Meanwhile, the family of one more accused Shabir Ahmed Gojri speaking to The Kashmiriyat said that Shabir a driver by profession had left home to visit the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer Sharif of Rajhastan.

Shaista, his wife said her husband visits the shrine every year and this time another youth from the same village Riyaz Ahmed accompanied him, “He called me late on Sunday night saying that he was alright and the next morning, i saw that he had been detained.”
