The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), which was barged into by Delhi Police after being one of the main centres of the anti-CAA protests in New Delhi has been ranked among the top ten universities of India by the HRD Ministry of India.
Jawahar Lal Nehru, which has often been labelled as Anti national University, has also figured among the top 10 universities in the country.
Aligarh Muslim University has also surfaced among the top twenty universities in the rankings, which includes the various Indian Institute of Technologies and institutes of national importance with the public universities.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of AMU is the ninth best Indian medical college in the rankings.
The Zakir Hussain College of Engineering in AMU has been ranked 35th among engineering colleges in India, while the Faculty of Management is ranked the 49th best of management colleges.
The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) announced the rankings on Thursday, The annual rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi had become the epicentre of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) after police barged into the campus and allegedly attacked students studying inside the library on December 15 last year, the Police however said that they entered the campus to look for outsiders involved in violence during the protests, a few metres away from the university.
A report by NDTV read, “It is the first time that the JMI has been placed among the top 10 universities in the NIRF rankings, the institute said. It has been given the 10th rank in the country in the “Universities” category. Last year, it was ranked 12th. In the “Overall” category, the university is at the 16th position, improving its ranking from last year’s 19th.”
NDTV quoted the JMI Vice-Chancellor Professor Najma Akhtar as saying, “The achievement is all the more significant because of the challenging times the university has faced recently and also in the light of increased competition in the ranking.”
The Faculty of Law of the university has been ranked ninth, the Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics tenth, the Faculty of Dentistry 19th, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology 28th and the Faculty of Management 34th in the country by the NIRF-2020.
