Jammu Kashmir: Unemployment rate grows from 21.6 per cent in September to 22.2 per cent in October

Unemployment in Jammu Kashmir seems is growing at a fast face and it is causing concern among the people of the region.

CMIE has pegged India’s unemployment rate at 7.2 per cent, while Jammu Kashmir has an unemployment rate of 22.2 percent for the month of October compared to 21.6 percent for the month of October.

The rising rate of unemployment rate in Jammu Kashmir continues to be a major issue for the youth.

Directorate of Employment last year witnessed three lakh registrations by post graduates and PhD degree holders.

Last year, when the Jammu Kashmir Service Selection Board adevertised 8000 class IV posts, more than 5.4 lakh aspirants applied for these posts.

Official figures suggest that the JK administration has advertised around 10,000 jobs, of which 8,575 were Class IV posts ever since the new domicile laws were introduced in May 2020, which also allows non-residents to apply.

According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), the combined un-employment rate of J&K and Ladakh hit the highest 17.8 percent in October-December of 2020; against the national average was 7.12 percent.

Yusuf Tarigami reacting to last month’s unemployment rate had expressed serious concern. He said the figures expose the claims of the BJP government that JK witnessed large “growth and development” after the revocation of the former state’s special status under Article 370 in August 2019, the CPI(M) leader said.

The government gives “concocted and fabricated” stories vis-à-vis development, employment and other parameters of growth to mislead the people, he alleged.
