The Jammu Kashmir government is in the process of drafting a new media policy that will include social media platforms, news portals, and websites under its purview for empanelment, Kashmir News Observer reported.
Responding to a cut motion raised by Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, the government stated that the policy aims to align with the evolving media landscape and adhere to the standards set by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), Government of India.
The government also addressed concerns regarding the Srinagar Press Club, stating that it was vacated due to internal disputes among its members.
“The Press Club was operating from a building provided by the Estates Department at Press Enclave, Srinagar. However, due to a dispute among members, the building has been vacated and is now temporarily occupied by the Jammu Kashmir Police,” the government stated.
Additionally, the registration of the Kashmir Press Club remains on hold pending clearance from the Criminal Investigation Department.
Meanwhile, a new entity, the Press Club of Kashmir, has been registered by the Department of Industries and Commerce.
The proposed media policy is expected to bring significant changes in the regulation and recognition of digital news platforms in Jammu Kashmir.
