Journo-turned militant missing since August killed in Srinagar encounter

23-year-old youth from Veeri area of south Kashmir’s Bijbehara who had gone missing from his home in the August last year has been killed in an encounter in the Rainawari area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

Rayees, as per the Police had joined the militant outfit Lashkar e Taiba and was accused in to FIRs including a case of Improvised Explosive Device’ (IED) attack on security forces in Anantnag, whihc was lodged against him in the same month in which he went missing.

According to the police, Rayees joined militant ranks in August 2021. He was ‘C’ category militant in their list.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat over the phone, a family member of the youth identified as Rayees Ahmed Veeri has said, “He went to the gym on Friday (August 06,2021) and said that he will return back soon, soon after this his phone went missing around the evening time.”

Rayees aged 23, son of Ghulam Mohammed Bhat, a resident of the Veeri area in Bijbehara other than working as a freelance journalist, also worked with a gas agency in Anantnag township in South Kashmir.

The family member had said that they called his number constantly, however his phone had been on switched off mode since.

“We also visited his relatives and friends, but we have been unable to trace him,” the family member said we ask appealing the Police and general public to help them trace him.

The family has filed a missing report at the concerned Police Station.

Two militants, Police said, were killed in the encounter at Rainawari area late on Tuesday night.

Police has identified the second slain militant as Hilal Ahmad Rah of Bijbehara, who was ‘C’ category militant.
