Kashmir University VC’s ‘Attack’ claim disputed by Police after investigation

Jammu Kashmir Police have contested the claim made by Kashmir University’s Vice Chancellor, Nilofar Khan, that her convoy was “attacked” near Zakura on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The incident, she said, occurred on Tuesday evening, while Khan was returning from a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

According to Khan, a bullet struck her escort vehicle around 7 pm, leading her security team to fire in response. “Thankfully, I was unharmed,” Khan told UNI, adding that the police were investigating the matter.

However, in a statement issued after investigating the scene, Srinagar Police reported finding no evidence to support Khan’s claims. Police units that inspected the area found no bullet marks or other signs of an attack.

“The report about the attack on the Vice Chancellor near Zakura could not be corroborated,” police said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Witnesses, including officers stationed at a nearby checkpoint, confirmed hearing no gunfire except for the rounds fired by Khan’s security personnel, which seemed to be based on suspicion rather than a confirmed threat.

The investigation remains ongoing, but initial findings suggest there was no attack on the Vice Chancellor’s convoy.
