Kashmiri driver mercilessly assaulted in Banihal, one arrested

A Kashmiri driver was allegedly assaulted in the Sharbibi area of Banihal on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway late on Wednesday night.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, Drivers Association president Shopian said that a driver identified as Aqib Ahmed Dar who is a resident of the Tulkhun area of south Kashmir’s Bijbehara area is admitted at the hospital after he was ruthlessly beaten by goons in the Banihal area.

“Aqib Ahmad Dar, who was driving his truck, coming from Jammu towards Srinagar was stopped by some people in a car (Verna) after a minor argument. He (the driver of the Verna car) verbally abused the Kashmiri driver and his accomplice, even though it was the mistake of the car driver,” he said.

The man in the Verna car made a call asking the person over the phone to stop the truck.

The driver who was accompanied by another man left the spot, however, within a small distance, some road construction workers near Sharbibi Ramsoo stopped the truck and dragged Aqib out of the truck. “They ruthlessly beat him after and smashed the window panes of the truck with sticks. The vehicle has also suffered massive damage,” he said.

Meanwhile, The president of Truck Drivers Association Jammu Kashmir Mohammed Hilal has brought the matter to the notice of SHO Banihal after which a police party was deputed to the spot and the driver was taken to SDH Banihal for treatment.

The General Secretary of the Union, Vice President of the union for Ramban have reached the hospital and are accompanying the driver

The union has lodged a written complaint in PS Banihal after which one person was arrested and further investigation is in process.
