Last year, at the time of Abrogation of article 370 and bifurcation of the state, Government of India had promised development and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits who had migrated from the valley in the early 1990s.
A year later, Kashmir Pandit’s living in Purkhoo migrant camp in Jammu are on dharna to demand the administration to fulfill their basic necessities of life.
Sudarshan Singh, a protesting Kashmiri pandit said, “One year has passed since, but nothing has changed for the Kashmiri Pandit’s living here,for the last 31 years.

We have been requesting the Government to send us back to Kashmir. We are ready to move back to the valley, that is our home. We can’t tolerate more suffering here”
Adding further he said, “Although I don’t reside in these camps but the people living here, are our brothers. There is a fear of snakes and scorpions, it is hard to survive in 50 degree temperature in such terrible conditions. Nothing has changed for us. We haven’t seen any development”.
Another Kashmir Pandit and BJP activist, Makhan Lal sitting on dharna with his community said. “We are here on dharna to force administration to renovate these migrant camps. Parents of these children don’t sleep the nights because of the fear of snakes, which frequent the camp.”
New Delhi claims to spend a huge amount of money on Kashmiri Pandits, but nothing has reached the ground level.
“These people don’t have toilets, it’s very shameful” said Makhan lal.
“We demand government to restore Our 1971 position, so that we can go back to our homes in Kashmir with pride and dignity”, said Makhan Lal.
Another young person said “I don’t want to talk much, we don’t have water, light, washrooms. After spending 20 years in these camps, we have nothing. we demand government to send us back to Kashmir.”
Besides male members of Kashmiri Pandit community, children and Women were also present in the dharna.
Dimple Sharma a young lady said, “We are living here for last six years. We are running from Pillar to post but no one is helping us. We don’t demand much but our simple demand is to give us basic facilities”.
