Kashmiri Photojournalist Thrashed, ‘Attacked with Sharp Object’ in Srinagar

A photojournalist from Srinagar alleged being attacked by a Security guard in Srinagar’s Hazratbal area of Sunday afternoon.

Ubaid Mukhtar, a photojournalist from Srinagar said that he was stopped by security guard in the Dargah campus of the Kashmir university in Srinagar and attacked with a “sharp iron weapon”.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat Ubaid said that he was asked to leave the campus when he was there for an Autumn shoot. “They asked me to leave the campus as it was not allowed to shoot inside the campus premises, i turned off my camera and left the spot,” Ubaid said.

He said that when he was leaving the campus, a security guard shouted at him that all Journalists in Kashmir were propagandists. “‘You are all thieves, we know you,’ the  Guard told me,” Ubaid alleged.

Ubaid said that when he tried to question the guard, he attacked him with a sharp object right below his left eye, after which Ubaid started bleeding profusely.

From here, Ubaid was rushed to the hospital by his cousin who was accompanying him during throughout the incident.

Ubaid has received multiple stiches and says that his eyesight has also been impacted to a great degree because of the attack. “The doctors have asked me to come back for tests tomorrow,” Ubaid told The Kashmiriyat over phone.

After being treated at the hospital, Ubaid and his cousin went to the local Police station where an FIR was lodged. The Police officials have initiated a probe into the incident. “They promised me that  the officials will initiate action against the guilty,” Ubaid told The Kashmiriyat.

Meanwhile the Srinagar Police said, “An FIR has been registered at the Nigeen Police Station registered on the basis of a complaint from ubaid Dar wherein he alleged that he was manhandled by the Watch & Ward Staff of Kashmir University.”
