Khanyar: Kashmir capital witnesses an encounter after nearly 3 years

Kashmir capital Srinagar today witnessed an encounter after a gap of nearly 3 years.

The data available with the news agency Kashmir News Trust reveals that after a pause of 2 years and 10 months, there has been a gunfight in Srinagar city.

The last gunfight that broke out in the capital city was in the first week of January 2022 when two militants including Muhammad Salim Parrey from Hajin Bandipora and Hafiz – a Pakistani militant were killed in Shalimar area of Srinagar outskirts.

Since then no encounter was reported from any part of the Srinagar city. However, militants managed to strike in different parts of the Srinagar after the killing of two militants in Shalimar in 2022.

On 22 January 2023, militants lobbed a grenade in the Eidgah area of Srinagar in which a civilian Ajaz Rashid Deva of Sangam Srinagar was injured.

On 18 September 2023 militants fired upon a CRPF vehicle escorting a BJP leader in Khanyar area of Srinagar, however, there were no reports of any injury.

On 29 October 2023, militants fired upon Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani at Eidgah Srinagar while playing cricket. The officer succumbed to his injuries in the first week of December the same year.

On 7 February 2024, militants shot dead two non-locals from Punjab- Amritpal Singh and Rohit Mashi in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar.

Besides, a militant from Illahi Bagh Srinagar Danish Aijaz Sheikh was killed in an encounter at Frasipora village of South Kashmir’s Pulwama on 11 April 2024. [KNT
