Kulgam goes Azadi Azadi as Thousands Gather for Funeral of Longest Surviving Militant

Tens and thousands of people have gathered in Hawoora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam District on Wednesday to offer funeral prayers of one of the longest surviving Militants, Altaf Ahmed Dar.

People in droves of hundreds and thousands are still marching towards Hawoora area from various parts of South Kashmir as the area is reverberating with high pitch ‘Azadi’ Slogans.

A participant told The Kashmiriyat that militants in four separate groups came and fired in the air as a mark of respect to the slain Hizb Commander, who had joined Militancy some 14 years ago.

“At least fifteen Militants including the District commander of Lashkar e Taiba for Kulgam, Azad Dada offered gun salute to the slain Militant,” the participant said.

Women in large numbers have gathered at the funeral ground, while many have prepared food and drinks for the people who are marching towards the funeral ground.

The whole area is in a deep shock over the death of one of the longest surviving Militant, “There is hardly anyone home, people are either out for funeral or on streets providing food and water to others,” a resident told The Kashmiriyat.

on the way to the funeral ground, pro freedom Taranas are being played on the loudspeaker of the mosques as youth in large numbers from as far as Shopian are reaching the ground laden in trucks and on Motorcycles.

“The area is flooded with Motorcycles and cars, there are at least 40,000 people here,” the local said adding that, “Altaf was loved here.”

“People have taken out what they had cooked for themselves and giving it to those who are visiting the area for funeral, arrangements have been made to quench the thirst of the funeral participants,” he told The Kashmiriyat.
