The residents of different areas of Kulgam district on Friday staged a protest against the authorities for dumping garbage on the banks of nallah Vishow.
They said that the municipal committee has turned the nallah into a dumping site due to which the water of the nallah has got polluted.
They added that for decades the entire dirt and garbage of the district is being dumped on the banks of Nallah Vishow in Chawalgam Kulgam which is littering the water body and the people living along the Nallah and those who are dependent on this Nallah its water are unable to use it.
“If the Municipal Committee has now decided to turn the riverbank into a dumping site it must at least, install machines around the dumping site so that the water body won’t get polluted,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, a local resident.
He said that since the last two decades they have been continuously taking up this issue with the higher-ups but to no avail.
He added that if the MC fails to take any action in the coming days, the whole population of the area will come on roads.
Locals said that as the site is open, the foul smell coming from the site has made the life of the people living near too miserable.
“Besides that locals, the commuters too are facing problems as stray dogs are also rampant in the area,” the protestors said.
They demanded that the government must install a solid waste management plant.
