‘Left home in 2017, Never returned back’- Who was top commander Zahid Wani of Kareemabad?

Zahid Wani top militant commander and a foreigner were killed in Naira Pulwama during an encounter that raged in the area late on Saturday.

Jammu Kashmir Police said that a joint team of Indian Army’s 55 RR, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF came under heavy fire, when they had launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

During the exchange of fire, two militants were killed which included Zahid Ahmed Wani of Pulwama’s Kareemabad.

Zahid Manzoor Wani, a resident of Karimabad Pulwama left his in April 2017 to never return.

Initially, his family thought he may have joined protests in the nearby village of Hakripora, where Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Abu Dujana was trapped in a gunfight, but Dujana escaped.

A month later, Zahid announced his association with Hizbul Mujahideen, when he posted a gun-wielding photo on social networking sites.

Zahid as per his family had completed his bachelor’s degree in science from Pulwama Government Degree college and immediately after, he joined the family business of selling pesticides at a shop in south Kashmir before he gave that up to join militancy.

One of Zahid’s brothers was doing MBBS while the other one was pursuing a BSc in Pulwama college when he joined militancy.

Zahid’s family in Karimabad Pulwama owns an apple orchard that fetches a harvest of nearly Rs 20 lakh each year.
