Ministries told to report action against anti-national content by May 8

In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, the Standing Committee on Information Technology has issued an urgent office memorandum calling for action against social media influencers and platforms allegedly acting against the national interest.

The memorandum, dated May 2025 and marked “Most Immediate,” directs the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to furnish details of contemplated actions to curb such platforms.

The move comes under the framework of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

“The undersigned is directed to state that post terror attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, 2025, some social media influencers and social media platforms in the country seem to be working against the interest of the country which is likely to incite violence,” the memorandum states.

The concerned ministries have been asked to submit their responses by May 8, 2025. The memorandum also specifies that the soft copy of the response may be emailed to the committee at (comit@sansad.nic.in](mailto:comit@sansad.nic.in).

The directive reflects growing governmental concern over the role of online platforms in shaping narratives during sensitive events.
