A mutton shop has been sealed in the Kulgam district of south Kashmir over allegations of selling dead animals, rather than slaughtered ones.

Officials told The Kashmiriyat that on Saturday evening, a mutton shop was sealed near the old bus stand area of Kulgam town following complaints of selling dead animals in the south Kashmir town.

Tehsildar Kulgam said, “Various complaints had been received against the mutton seller as he had not been slaughtering sheep at the designated spot. Locals had complained that he has been selling dead animals, following which, officials conducted raids at the shop.”

During the raid, a team consisting of food safety officials, local administration, Kulgam municipality representatives, veterinary doctors, and police found that the quality of meat did not meet acceptable consumable standards. Specifically, the meat quality was found to be subpar and unsatisfactory.

“The shop was immediately sealed and the accused was handed over to the Police,” the official told The Kashmiriyat, while appealing to the public to check the seal of the slaughter house on the animal before purchasing mutton.
