NIA widens Pahalgam attack probe, 75 detained under PSA: Report

In the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley that killed 25 tourists and one local resident on April 22, Jammu Kashmir Police have detained 75 individuals under the Public Safety Act (PSA). The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the probe, which has now widened to include regions beyond Kashmir.

The attack, which unfolded in a remote meadow nearly 90 km from Srinagar, has triggered one of the largest security operations in recent years. Authorities have interrogated more than 2,000 individuals and launched extensive raids across Kashmir and parts of Jammu, according to a report by The Economic Times

Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) V K Birdi confirmed the detentions under the PSA, a controversial law allowing detention without trial for up to two years. “Seventy-five people [have been] slapped with PSA,” Birdi told the newspaper.

Security agencies claim to have identified key suspects involved in the attack and have reportedly dismantled several overground worker (OGW) networks that supported the militants.

With the NIA now in charge, investigations have extended into the Chenab and Pir Panjal regions, indicating the possible spread of militant infrastructure beyond south Kashmir.

The April 22 assault has renewed concerns over the security of tourist hotspots ahead of the summer season. Authorities have since bolstered security across resorts and pilgrimage routes to prevent further incidents.
