Nocturnal protests erupt against electricity cuts in Srinagar’s downtown area

Nocturnal protests have erupted in the Rajouri Kadal locality of Srinagar’s downtown area over the absence of electricity.

Agitated locals took to the streets on Monday night and said that they do not have electricity for more than three hours which has created issues in the area.

They said that on one side the government is forcing smart meters of people and on the other their electricity is being cut constantly.

“We have patients at home, several of them are on oxygen support. The absence of electricity has risked their lives too,” a protesting woman said.

They should make it clear whether they want to supply electricity or not. “If not, we will cut down the electricity wires and start lighting our houses with candles,” they said.

Several protestors have been staged across Kashmir against the electricity cuts and installation of smart meters which locals say have led to inflated bills.

Officials from the electricity department have denied the claims of inflated bills and said that the meters will be installed.
