‘On western pattern’: Indian Universities can now admit students twice a year

The University Grants Commission (UGC) Approves Biannual Admissions for Higher Education Institutions.

M Jagadesh Kumar, the chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC), announced on Tuesday that higher education institutions would now have the option to admit students biannually in regular mode starting from the academic year 2024-25.

This decision, made during the UGC meeting on May 5, marks a departure from the current annual admission system observed by universities and colleges in July-August each year.

Previously, institutions adhered to a single admission cycle annually. However, in light of last year’s successful implementation of biannual admissions for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes, the UGC aims to expand this opportunity to institutions offering programs in regular mode.

The move comes as a response to the substantial demand for biannual admissions, which saw nearly half a million students enrolling in ODL and online programs during the previous academic year. By extending this option to regular mode programs, the UGC seeks to enhance accessibility and flexibility for students, as well as to align with global educational standards.

While the adoption of biannual admissions is not mandatory for institutions, those with adequate infrastructure and faculty resources are encouraged to consider the benefits. This shift is expected to facilitate smoother transitions for students, improve employment opportunities through increased campus recruitment cycles, and bolster India’s competitiveness as a global study destination.

However, the UGC emphasizes the need for thorough preparation by institutions to manage the administrative challenges and ensure a seamless transition for students admitted at different times of the year. With proper planning and support systems in place, biannual admissions have the potential to significantly enhance the Gross Enrolment Ratio and contribute to the realization of the goals outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.\

Pertinently, several western countries, including Germany, Australia, Canada, South Korea, and Norway, have been following a biannual admission cycle for their higher education institutions.
