Pahalgam attack: India halts Indus Waters Treaty, Expels Pakistani military personnel

In a sharp escalation following a recent terrorist attack, India announced a series of stringent measures against Pakistan, aimed at holding Islamabad accountable for its alleged support of cross-border terrorism. The decisions were taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and were conveyed to the media by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in New Delhi.

One of the most significant moves is the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between the two countries. “Recognising the seriousness of this terrorist attack, the CCS has decided that the Indus Waters Treaty will be held in abeyance with immediate effect,” Misri said. He added that the suspension will continue until Pakistan “credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism.”

India has also ordered the immediate closure of the integrated checkpost at Attari. While the checkpost will no longer operate, individuals who entered India with valid endorsements may return through this route before May 1, 2025.

In another major step, India has barred Pakistani nationals from travelling to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. All previously issued Special Permit Entry Scheme (SPES) visas for Pakistani nationals are now deemed cancelled. Those currently in India under such visas have been directed to leave the country within 48 hours.

Additionally, India has declared the Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors posted at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi as persona non grata. These officials have been given a week to depart from Indian soil. In a reciprocal move, India will also withdraw its own defence advisors stationed at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. These posts in both missions are now considered annulled.

These sweeping measures mark a significant deterioration in India-Pakistan ties and signal a hardened diplomatic stance from New Delhi amid renewed tensions.
