Pahalgam attack: Married 5 days ago, Indian Navy officer among deceased

An Indian Navy officer was among the 26 people killed in the horrifying attack near the picturesque town of Pahalgam in Jammu Kashmir on Tuesday.

The officer, identified as Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, was just 26 years old. A native of Haryana, Lt. Narwal had recently tied the knot on April 16 and was on leave from his posting in Kochi at the time of the attack.

“One Indian Navy Officer, Lieutenant Vinay Narwal (aged 26 years), who was posted in Kochi, has been killed in the Pahalgam attack while he was on leave. He is a native of Haryana and got married on 16 April,” reported ANI, quoting Defence officials.

The assault unfolded around 3 pm at Baisaran, a scenic meadow surrounded by pine forests about six kilometres from Pahalgam. The area is a popular destination for trekkers and tourists alike. In what is now the deadliest terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since the Pulwama strike in 2019, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire, killing 26 people, including two foreign nationals and two local residents.

The incident coincided with the visit of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to India and comes at a time when the Valley is witnessing a surge in tourist activity.

In response to the attack, a joint search operation has been launched by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the general area of Baisaran, Pahalgam.

“The search operation is currently in progress, with all efforts focused on bringing the attackers to justice,” said the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army in an official statement.

As the nation reels from the shock, tributes continue to pour in for the lives lost, including that of a young officer who had just stepped into a new chapter of life.
