Following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead, dozens of Pakistani nationals—mostly women—have been detained across various districts of Jammu Kashmir for defying deportation orders, Kashmir Dot Com reported on Monday.
Citing highly placed sources, Kashmir Dot Com said the individuals detained had ignored notices issued by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), CID Special Branch, who also serves as the Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO) in Kashmir.
Most of those apprehended are women who had entered the region from Pakistan-administered Kashmir under the 2010 rehabilitation policy and have since built lives and families in Kashmir.
An official told the Srinagar-based news agency that the detentions were carried out in accordance with an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (Foreigners-I Division) on April 25, 2025. The order had instructed all Pakistani nationals residing illegally in India to leave the country by April 27.
Despite receiving deportation notices, many stayed beyond the deadline, prompting police to launch a coordinated crackdown.
According to sources quoted by KDC, the detained individuals will be taken to the Wagah border for repatriation following due process.
The move has sparked distress among affected families, especially among women who have lived in Kashmir for years. No official count of the detainees has been released yet, though preparations are reportedly underway at high administrative levels.
As per the Union government’s order, any Pakistani national who remains in India past the set deadline may face arrest, a jail term of up to three years, or a fine of up to Rs 3 lakh, or both.
Meanwhile, Pakistani wives of former Kashmiri militants—rehabilitated under the Omar Abdullah-led government’s 2010 policy—have voiced anguish over the latest visa restrictions.
According to KDC, many said they would prefer to die rather than be forcibly sent back to Pakistan.
