Disrupting traffic for hours after hitting the road, the locals especially women folk from Zero Bridge and adjacent areas of uptown Srinagar staged a protest against the installation of Smart Meters on Tuesday.

Scores of women came out of their houses and blocked the road as soon as the officials from PDD arrived in the locality to install Smart Meters.

Due to the protest, commuters faced a lot of inconveniences. The protesting women while raising the slogans against the PDD said they can’t afford hefty power bills as they are hardly able to feed their families.

“Instead of forcing people to pay bills as per Smart Meters, the government should find ways and means to give respite to common citizens who have already suffered a lot due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is injustice and we won’t be able to pay huge power bills. Power is a necessity in Kashmir due to its cold weather,” one of the female protesters told news agency Kashmir News Trust.

The protesters said that they won’t allow the installation of these Smart Meters.

After in intervention of the concerned SHO and BJP leader Hina Bhat, the protesters dispersed peacefully. Pertinently, Srinagar city has witnessed dozens of protests against the installation of Smart Meters. (KNT)
