‘Provided no alternative location’, 7 ex-legislators served eviction notices

Suhail Dar

Seven former legislators and one municipal councilor have been served eviction notices by the Jammu Kashmir admin to vacate government quarters in the Housing Colony Khanabal area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

News reports mentioned that those served notices include Mehbooba Mufti, former legislators Mohammad Altaf Wani, Abdul Rahim Rather, Abdul Majeed Bhat alias Larmi, Altaf Shah Alias Kaloo, Dr. Bashir Ahmed Shah alias Veeri, Choudhary Nizamuddin, Abdul Kabir Pathan and MC councilor Sheikh Mohiuddin.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat, Dr. Bashir Veeri of the National Conference confirmed the Development and said, they have been served an eviction notice by Executive Magistrate (1st Class) Anantnag on Saturday on the directions of deputy commissioner Anantnag.

“We have been provided no alternative location. Nobody has told us anything. My ancestral property was burnt down by militants during the decade of the ’90s and I have no alternate location to move to. Several legislators have been threatened and attacked in the past. We were moved to the colony, a high-security zone keeping the security situation in view. Now, we do not know, whose mercy are we being left to,” Dr. Bashir Veeri told The Kashmiriyat over the phone.

He said that such “insensitivity” has put the lives of the former legislators at high risk.

The government quarters are located at the Housing Colony Khanabal which is a high security zone.

As per news reports, the occupants have been warned of action under law if they fail to vacate the premises within the stipulated time.
