Sakina Itoo directs Shopian, Kulgam admins to assess hailstorm damage for farmer compensation

Cabinet minister, Sakina Itoo on Saturday directed the district administrations of Shopian and Kulgam to conduct an immediate assessment of damages caused by a severe hailstorm that struck parts of south Kashmir, devastating orchards and threatening the livelihood of local farmers.

The hailstorm, which occurred on Friday afternoon, hit several areas across the region, with Shopian among the worst affected. Villages including Aglar, Reshinagar, Balpora, Ganopora, Ladijan, and Trenz suffered extensive damage to apple orchards.

Locals expressed alarm over the destruction. “The hailstorm destroyed our orchards severely. We appeal to the government to compensate the losses,” a resident from Aglar told The Kashmiriyat.

Sakina Itoo, responding to the widespread damage, directed officials to immediately evaluate the situation and initiate the process for compensation to the affected farmers.

“It is essential that the losses are properly recorded and timely relief is provided,” she said.
