The authorities have arrested several doctors and medical workers for involvement in a huge scam selling Covid-19 vaccines in India, to which thousands of people have fallen prey.
A senior official of the Mumbai Police Department, Vishal Thakur, has said that atleast 12 fake vaccination drives were held in or near the financial capital Mumbai.
“They were using saline water and injecting it,” he said. “Every fake vaccination camp that they held, they were doing this.”
It is estimated that over 2,500 people were given fake shots. The drive organizers had also charged the victims fee for the shots, of which they earned around $ 28,000 in total.
“We have arrested doctors,” Thakur added. “They were using a hospital which was producing the fake certificates, vials, syringes.”
He informed the media that 14 people have been arrested so far, on suspicion of cheating, attempts at culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and other charges. Since the police continues to investigate the scam, more arrests are likely to take place.
As per a report by CNN-News 18, the fake vaccination drives took place between late May and early June. The investigation into the matter began when some of the victims, who were suspicious of the vaccination certificates they recieved, reported it to the Police.
It has also emerged that one of the fake drives took place at a housing society, but “none of our members got any symptoms and also we had to pay in cash,” said one of the residents.
