‘Selective’ Demolition in Gujjar Areas Raises Eyebrows in Jammu

On Saturday, The Finance and Forest Department started a demolition drive on the houses belonging to the Gujjar and Bakarwal community in Bandi area of District Jammu.

Demolition is being carried out by the district administration in Jammu region for last few years but these demolition drives have been questioned, People say that the Jammu Kashmir administration is targeting people belonging to a special class.

Recently, the Jammu district administration started demolishing houses of people living illegally in areas like Sidra, Ragoda, Bandi Mohalla and Lower Dwada.

The Jammu Kashmir High Court had issued an order in this regard.

According to the court, illegal occupation in Jammu should be removed.

After that the administration took action and started demolition operation in Bali, Charana, Sidra, Bathandi, areas and on Saturday several houses were demolished in a village called Bandi.

The victims while taking to The Kashmiriyat said, “We have been living here for 50 years and the Forest and Revenue Department has never objected to us staying there, but now suddenly the administration have demolished our houses in our area, which makes it clear that special Class people are being targeted”.

“Although other people in Jammu have taken possession of hundreds of Kanals of forest land, the forest department has not taken action against them,” said Noor Mohammad told The Kashmiriyat, while Muslims living in the minority are being targeted.

“We have been living here for 50 years and suddenly our house was demolished today,” he added.

“If the department or the government is demolishing our house, then they should provide us with an alternative space or reasonable compensation so that we do not have to sleep on the the road side,” he said.
