Police on Sunday said they have detained several social media handlers for allegedly spreading false information regarding the recent encounter in the Ajas area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
In a statement issued to GNS, the police said that Bandipora Police received credible inputs from multiple sources indicating that certain individuals had “circulated fabricated and misleading narratives” on social media about the encounter that took place at Kulnar Bazipora Ajas on April 24, 2025.
Following this, a criminal case has been registered against the account holders responsible for sharing the false information.
“The dissemination of such fabricated content poses a threat to national security and has the potential to disrupt law and order in the region,” the statement said.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Bandipora Police registered an FIR (No. 71/25) under Section 152 of the BNS and Section 66(f) of the IT Act at Police Station Bandipora.
Investigation into the case is underway.
“So far, a few individuals have been apprehended for questioning regarding their involvement in the case. Further legal action will follow as per the law,” the statement added.
The police have urged social media users to act responsibly and avoid engaging in activities that breach legal and ethical norms.
It warned that stringent action, including prosecution under relevant laws, will be taken against anyone found misusing digital platforms for unlawful purposes. (GNS)
