Shopian militant among two killed in Shopian encounter

Two militants have been killed in an encounter that raged between government forces and militants in the Kilbal area of Shopian district on Saturday.

A Police official said that two militants have been killed who have been identified as locals, one of them is a resident of Shopian and the other is from Pulwama.

Earlier, an official confirming the exchange of gunfire to The Kashmiriyat said that 34 RR of Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu Kashmir Police had launched a cordon and search operation in the Kilbal area of Shopian.

During the cordon, the militants opened fire and in the exchange of gunfire, two militants were killed, he said.

“In the ensuing encounter, two militants of proscribed outfit LeT (TRF) were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter. They have been identified as Sameer Ahmad Shah son of Nazir Ahmad Shah resident of Dhangam Shopian and Rayees Ahmad Mir son of Mohd Ashraf Mir Takiya Wahgam Pulwama,” the official said.

As per police records, both the killed militants were part of a group involved in several criminal cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities.

Pertinently, the encounter in Shopian is the ninth one in the month of January. Earlier sixteen militants including top commanders were killed in the encounters in Kashmir.
