Srinagar Areas Observe Shutdown to Mark the Anniversary of ‘Gaw Kadal Massacre’

The commercial hub of Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and adjoining areas on Thursday observed a shutdown to mark the anniversary of the 1990 Gaw Kadal incident.

Shops, business establishments, and offices in Gaw Kadal, Basant Bagh, Lal Chowk, Maisuma, Residency Road, and Maulana Azad Road are shut to mark the anniversary, Locals told The Kashmiriyat.

Meanwhile, people are visiting the martyrs’ graveyard of Srinagar to offer Fateh Khwani to the victims of the massacre.

52 people were killed on the 21st of January in 1990 on the Gaw Kadal bridge when Government Forces opened indiscriminate fire on civilians in this Srinagar area. The call for shutdown was issued by Hurriyat Conference.
