Srinagar residents stage protest against ongoing electricity crisis in Jammu Kashmir

Residents of the Lawaypora area in Srinagar district hit the streets against the Power Development Department over the ongoing power crisis in the Kashmir valley.

Eyewitnesses told The Kashmiriyat that on Wednesday scores of residents blocked the Highway demanding immediate restoration of the electricity to their area.

“We have never seen such an electricity crisis in Kashmir, not even during waters. We do not understand why is the development only visible on newspaper frontpages and on social media and on the ground people are undergoing the worst crisis,” Ghulam Mohammed Shah, a local resident said.

He alleged that the area receives less than three hours of electricity in the day.

The Kashmiriyat reported earlier how students and businesses across the valley were suffering losses due to the ongoing electricity crisis in the region during the holy month of Ramadan.

One of the worst power crises that the valley has seen in recent times has left the residents aghast and businesses in the valley are suffering immensely. In the ongoing month of Ramadan, the urban areas are seeing cuts as long as 8-10 hours. While, in the rural areas, people say the cuts last as long as 15-17 hours.

From the north of Kashmir to down south, residents are aghast and many have taken to social media to express their anguish over the non-delivery of the promises made by the Jammu Kashmir administration.

Protests were also reported from Khawaja Bagh area of Baramulla and various other areas against the unscheduled power cuts in the Jammu Kashmir region.
