Several student groups have alleged that students from the marginalized communities were discriminated as they were marked as low as 1 or 2 in the viva voce held for admission to Ph.D. in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Fraternity Movement in a statement said that, “These are the same students who scored remarkably well in their objective written exams.”
“The testimonials collected show how the marks are given are not just unjustified, but also humiliating, as well as there is a caste and religion bias for the same,” Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), which is one of the prominent student groups in JNU, said in a letter to the varsity’s vice-chancellor and Teachers’ Association.
JNU Students Union president Aishe Ghosh called on the JNU Administration to answer as to what is making them take such discriminatory policies.
Deepika Singh, one of the Ph.D. Candidates said that the Viva is a tool of discrimination, systematically used against Bahujans.
Students Federation of India (SFI) has given a call for a protest against the same at the office of JNU’s admission branch on 13 December.
