On Sunday, hours after the Taliban captured the northern city of Kunduz, it has also captured Sar-e-Pul now.
As of Sunday alone, it has captured two northern cities. This marks a major blow to the Afghan government.
On Friday, it took over Zaranj of Nimroz province, while on Saturday, it took over Sheberghan of Jawzjan.
The Taliban had seized much of the countryside in recent months. The Afghan government had abandoned the countryside and decided to protect the urban centres.
The lawmakers and residents in these cities confirmed that Kunduz and Sar-e-Pul in the north fell within hours of each other Sunday after fierce fighting.
A Kunduz resident had also described the city as being enveloped in total chaos.
“After some fierce fighting, the mujahideen, with the grace of God, captured the capital of Kunduz,” the Taliban said in a statement, earlier today.
