The American news agency, Associated Press, terminated a new staffer, Emily Wilder, in connection with her tweets, in which she spoke about the sufferings of Palestinians and crimes committed by the Israeli government.
Wilder says she had joined the AP on 3 May and was fired in less than three weeks following a smear campaign launched against her by right-wing groups including Stanford College Republicans.
A spokesperson for the wire service said that ”she was dismissed for violations of AP’s social media policy during her time at AP.” He added, one person, cannot create dangerous conditions for our journalists covering the story. Every AP journalist is responsible for safeguarding our ability to report on this conflict, or any other, with fairness and credibility, and cannot take sides in public forums.”
In her statement posted on her Twitter account, she said that she was made a ”scapegoat”. ”What does it mean for this industry that even sharing the painful experiences of Palestinians or interrogating the language we use to describe them can be seen as irredeemably ”biased?” she asked.
Wilder said that ”she was an active member of the pro-Palestinian groups Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine at Stanford University, from which she graduated in 2020”.
On Sunday, she tweeted her criticism of media reportage on the Israel-Palestinian conflict. She called out media outlets for whitewashing the crimes of Israel through their reportage.
”objectivity feels fickle when the basic terms we use to report news implicitly stake a claim. using ”Israel” but never ”Palestine,” or ”war” but not ”siege and occupation” are political choices—yet media make those exact choices all the time without being flagged as biased,” she tweeted.
”I will not be intimidated into silence.
