‘The Kerala Story’: One killed, several injured, Internet snapped after communal clashes break out in Maharashtra

One person has been killed during the communal violence in Akola city and Shevgaon village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in the last two days, while 132 people have been detained so far after the clashes left one person dead and 13 others injured, including two policemen.

The clash started over a post on Hindi Film, The Kerala Story on social media in the sensitive Old City area of Akola, prompting the police to impose curfew in some pockets. People belonging to two groups hurled stones at each other and also torched some two-wheelers and four-wheelers during the violence.

In Shevgaon village, a clash broke out over a procession on Sunday night that left five persons injured. Stone pelting by the rioters also damaged several shops.

While more than 100 people were deatined in Akola, 32 were taken into custody in Shevgaon. Cases were registered against 150 people in Shevgaon, an official said, PTI reported.

Following the clashes, a curfew was imposed by the administration in Akola. However, it was lifted in areas under the jurisdiction of City Kotwali and Ramdas Peth police station limits.

The curfew will, however, continue within the limits of Dabki Road and Old City police stations at night (between 8 pm and 8 am). Some relaxations will be provided during day time, officials said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday directed the police to take strict action against those behind the violence in Akola and Shevgaon and urged people to maintain peace and social harmony, said his office.
