Top U.S. Official criticizes Hijab Ban; Indian Ministry of External Affairs says ‘Motivated comments on internal issues not welcome’

On Friday, a top U.S. official condemned the ban on Hijab in certain colleges in Karnataka. Rashad Hussain, the U.S. official and the Ambassador at Large for Religious Freedom, took to Twitter and said that the Indian state of Karnataka should not determine the permissibility of religious clothing.

“Religious freedom includes the ability to choose one’s religious attire. The Indian state of Karnataka should not determine permissibility of religious clothing. Hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom and stigmatize and marginalize women and girls,” the Ambassador said.

Meanwhile, the official Spokesperson Indian Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi, reacting to the U.S. Ambassador’s statement issued a statement on Saturday said that motivated comments on Indian issues were not welcome.

“A matter regarding dress code in some educational institutions in the state of Karnataka is under judicial examination by the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. Our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as our democratic ethos and polity, are the context in which issues are considered and resolved. Those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of these realities. Motivated comments on our internal issues are not welcome,” the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said.

It is pertinent to mention that in the month of January, a college in the southern Indian state of Karnataka refused to let in female Muslim students who wore a Hijab, after which the students protested against the Hijab Ban, saying that there was no prescribed dress code in the college which was violated. The controversy grabbed international last week when a group of male Hindu students hounded a Hijab-clad Muslim student for her choice of clothing and chanted ‘Jai Sri Ram’ at her.
