Mohammed Mufeez

The Tral township in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday is observing a complete shutdown to protest against an unprecedented ‘hike’ in the electricity tariff by Power Development Department.

Decrying the hike in electricity charges in Kashmir, the locals speaking to The Kashmiriyat said that the hike in electricity charges is overburdening a common man. “We want the department to stop overcharging electricity consumers,” a protestor told The Kashmiriyat.

The call for shutdown and protest was given by Citizen’s Council Tral.

A protest was led by Chairman of the Tral Citizens Council Farooq Ahmed Trali.

Speaking to scores of people during the protest march Trali said, “We tried to appraise the issue of power-hike on numerous occasions at several offices, but no action has been taken so far.”

The shops and business establishments in the area remained shut, while traffic movement was thin on the streets of the South Kashmir township.

Aejaz Assad, the MD of Kashmir Power Discom meanwhile denying the allegations of electricity charges hike said that the power tariffs in Jammu Kashmir have remained unchanged for the last four years.
