Tripura Police Book Two More Journalists for Reporting on ‘Anti- Muslim’ Violence

Days after goons attacked Muslims in Tripura, the Tripura Police booked 102 accounts were booked under the Anti-terror law. The Police also booked the members of the Fact-finding team on Tripura Violence under the anti-terror law- UA(P)A.

The Tripura Government, despite international condemnation does not seem to be backing down. The Police has booked two more journalists for reporting on Anti-Muslim Violence unleashed by violent Hindutva mobs in Tripura.

The two journalists named Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha working for HW News Network have been booked by Tripura Police.

The FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint by the member of a right-wing group- Kanchan Das. The right-wing group is said to be responsible the week-long assaults on Muslims in the state.

In his complaint, Kanchan Das has alleged, “The journalists were a part of a criminal conspiracy to damage the communal harmony of Tripura and malign the image of VHP and Tripura’s BJP government.”

He also alleged that the duo made an “instigating speech” against Hindus and Tripura government while visiting the Muslim community in the Paul Bazaar area.

Samriddhi also said in a tweet that she and her colleague are not being allowed to move outside from their hotel.

“The police arrived yesterday at the hotel around 10:30 at night and served the FIR copy in the morning 5:30am. We were supposed to leave for the capital Agartala but have been not allowed to move despite full cooperation. There are around 16-17 police deployed outside our hotel,” reads her tweet.

The duo has been booked under section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). (Inputs from Maktoob)
