The sports fraternity in Srinagar is in mourning following the deaths of two well-known athletes from the Batamaloo area of Srinagar.

On Monday morning, Qayoom Channa, a renowned fast bowler and cricketer from Batamaloo, passed away. His funeral prayers (jinaza) will be held near the Ziyarat in Batamaloo later today. Channa was celebrated locally for his pace and commitment on the cricket field, having inspired many young players in the area.

Earlier, another prominent sportsperson from the same locality, Ali Mohammad Shalla, a veteran footballer, also breathed his last after a brief illness. His family confirmed his death while speaking to The Kashmiriyat. Shalla passed away on April 20 at his residence in Firdous Abad, Lane 15.

The football community issued a condolence message expressing deep grief over his demise. “The Football Fraternity deeply mourns the sad demise of Mr. Ali Mohammad Shalla, a veteran footballer of Jammu & Kashmir and a prominent defender of his time,” the statement read.

Shalla was a key figure in the footballing scene of the 1980s, having played for clubs such as KM D Mohammadan and the P&T Department. He represented Jammu and Kashmir in several national championships, including in 1983, 1985, 1987, and 1988. He was widely admired not only for his talent but also for his humility and gentle nature.

Locals and fellow sportspersons remember both Channa and Shalla as pillars of Batamaloo’s sporting legacy. Their contributions, they say, will be remembered for generations to come.
