UK, US, And Canada Accuse Russia of Stealing COVID-19 Vaccine Data

On Thursday, United Kingdom’s (UK) National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) accused Russia of trying to steal COVID-19 vaccine and treatment research from academic and pharmaceutical institutions around the world.

The UK, United States (US), and Canada put forth a co-ordinated statement attributing the cyber-attacks to the group APT29, also known as Cozy Bear.

In the joint statement, the three countries claim the group APT29 almost certainly operates as part of Russian intelligence services.

NCSC Director of Operations Paul Chichester said, “We condemn these despicable attacks against those doing vital work to combat the coronavirus pandemic”.

“APT29 is likely to continue to target organizations involved in COVID-19 vaccine research and development, as they seek to answer additional intelligence questions relating to the pandemic,” the NCSC statement stated.

The US Department of Homeland Security and US Cyber Command reported three hacking tools being used by the group APT29, namely; WELLMAIL, SOREFANG, and WELLMESS.

According to cybersecurity researchers, over the last year, the APT29 hacking tool has been used against clients in the United States, Japan, China, and Africa.

In response to the allegations, Russian news agency RIA quoted spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying Russia rejected UK’s allegations, which he stated were not backed by adequate evidence.
