Update: Son of Maulana Tariq Jameel passes away in Pakistan, Police issues statement

Asim Jamil, son of renowned Pakistani Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil, passed away in Punjab’s Talamba, his family told newspaper Dawn.

Confirming the news in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Maulana Tariq Jamil on Sunday evening said the “accidental death” had turned the atmosphere mournful.

“We request you all to remember us in your prayers on this sad occasion. May Allah grant my son a high place in heaven,” he added.

According to a statement from the Punjab police spokesperson, the reported cause of death was a “gunshot.”

Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Chaudhry, in a conversation with Dawn.com, stated that Asim had “shot himself in the chest” within a gymnasium at his residence.

The RPO mentioned that the family claimed it was a suicide. Chaudhry also noted that the police had obtained CCTV footage showing the incident, confirming Asim shooting himself in the chest.

This footage is being sent for forensic analysis.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar took notice of the incident and requested a report from the Multan RPO.

IGP Anwar emphasized the importance of determining the conclusive cause of death based on evidence and a forensic report.

The Punjab police’s official statement added that the Khanewal district police officer and other senior officials were present at the scene, collecting evidence.

National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf extended condolences and support to the grieving family.
