Upper reaches of Kashmir receive season’s first snowfall, mercury dips

Season’s first snowfall was witnessed in the higher reaches of Kashmir, including Zoji La pass Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Peer ki Gali.

Officials who spoke to The Kashmiriyat said that upper reaches of Kashmir that experienced fresh snowfall include Kangdoori in Gulmarg, Sadnah Top in Karnah, Sonmarg,Zojila Pass etc.

They said that due to inclement weather Mughal Road, connecting Shopian with twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri, was closed due to heavy snowfall, officials said.

DySP Traffic Rajouri-Poonch Range Aftab Bukhari confirmed it and said that the thoroughfare will reopen once it is cleared of the snow.

He said that snowfall occurred during the intervening night and at places there is considerable amount of snow, especially Pir Ki Gali where thickness is said to be around 2-ft.

“Commuters are advised to Contact TCU Jammu for any update regarding status of Mughal Road,” he added.

Due to the inclement weather Sinthan Margan Pass Route also closed for traffic movement.

The Metrological Department has predicted Rain/thundershowers in plains and snowfall over higher reaches in the coming hours.

Gradual improvement in weather is expected from today afternoon. By evening, rain/snow activities would have stopped at most places., MeT has said.

“From tomorrow, mostly dry weather is expected for the next 1 week,’ the MeT official told The Kashmiriyat.
