The United States (US) draft resolution on the extension of the arms embargo against Iran failed as Russia and China vetoed during the UN Security Council (UNSC) session on Friday.

The current weapons ban on Iran is set to expire in October as a part of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

The UNSC votes for extending the arms embargo were divided between the US and the Dominican Republic voting yes, eleven members, including France, Germany, and Britain, abstaining and Russia and China vetoing.

Commenting on the results US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said, “The Security Council’s failure to act decisively in defense of international peace and security is inexcusable.”

In a statement after the voting, China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun said that the result “once again shows that unilateralism receives no support and bullying will fail.”

The US could now work on reimposing all UN sanctions on Iran using a provision in the 2015 nuclear deal, known as snapback. The snapback process can be worked on as early as next week but would face a hard battle, according to diplomats.

Post the UNSC voting, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested a gathering of international leaders to prevent “confrontation” over the US returning all UN sanctions on Iran. Putin’s proposed video summit would include parties to the nuclear deal which include the US, Britain, France, China, Germany, and Iran.

President Putin intends to plan this summit in order to avoid further “escalation” at the UN over Iran, as an ally of Iran in the Syrian civil war.

Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iran’s UN Ambassador has warned the US against trying to reimpose sanctions on Iran.

“Imposition of any sanctions or restrictions on Iran by the Security Council will be met severely by Iran and our options are not limited. And the United States and any entity which may assist it or acquiesce in its illegal behavior will bear the full responsibility,” Ravanchi said in a statement.
