Uttar Pradesh Reports First Case of Kappa Covid-19 Variant after Delta Variant, Patient Dies

Hundreds of variations of the Virus, SARS-CoV-2, have been identified worldwide so far. Recently, two cases of the Delta Plus variant were found in Deoria and Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Now a patient has tested positive for the Kappa Variant in Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The patient, a 66-year-old man, has died.

The new Kappa Variant was detected during the genome sequencing.

As per the Head of the Microbiology department at BRD Medical College, Amresh Singh, the patient had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 27. He was admitted to the medical college on June 12.

On June 13, his sample was collected as routine and was later sent to CSIR’s Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.

Later, the institute confirmed the Kappa strain in the sample.

Amresh Singh said, “The patient died in the course of treatment on 14 June. He had no travel history.”

Like Delta plus Variant, Kappa has also been declared as a Variant of Concern by the authorities.

More than 2,000 samples have been sent for genome sequencing from Uttar Pradesh, Health officials have claimed.

Earlier this week, 2 cases of Delta plus variant were reported in Uttar Pradesh.

As per officials, the reports suggest that Virus was mutating in Uttar Pradesh as none of the three patients had any travel history.
