The new Kappa Variant was detected during the genome sequencing.

As per the Head of the Microbiology department at BRD Medical College, Amresh Singh, the patient had tested positive for COVID-19 on May 27. He was admitted to the medical college on June 12.

On June 13, his sample was collected as routine and was later sent to CSIR’s Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.

Later, the institute confirmed the Kappa strain in the sample.

Amresh Singh said, “The patient died in the course of treatment on 14 June. He had no travel history.”

Like Delta plus Variant, Kappa has also been declared as a Variant of Concern by the authorities.
