Video- Protests erupt in Amar Singh, Islamia College Srinagar; ‘Blasphemy accused booked’ says Police

Protests erupted at the Amar Singh and Islamia Colleges of Srinagar on Wednesday morning following derogatory remarks made by an NOT Srinagar student against Prophet Muhammad.

Meanwhile Police has said that it has taken cognizance of the incident of uploading of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of NIT,Hazratbal upon receipt of information from NIT authorities.

Case FIR No. 156/23 u/s 295A,153A,153 IPC registered in PS Nigeen.

Eyewitnesses  told The Kashmiriyat that hundreds of students including females gathered inside the campus of Amar Singh college in Srinagar where they raised slogans demanding action against the accused.

“We can tolerate anything, but anything against t our Prophet is intolerable to Muslims. He is our role model, our guide. It is shameful that such remarks are being made in a muslim majority state,” a student said.

He said that the protests were going on inside the campus.

Meanwhile, a protest was staged in Srinagar’s Islamia College against the accused person.

The incident gained attention through a circulated video, which showed students of NIT Srinagar rallying against the accused and demanding appropriate action.

Prathamesh Shindhe from NIT Srinagar sparked controversy with an offensive Instagram video, prompting organized protests from students and the community seeking redress.

The demonstrators blocked both institution gates in Nigeen and continued protests inside the campus until evening.

The controversy led to discussions on freedom of expression versus responsible communication among supporters and opponents of Prathamesh’s video.

Professor Atiq-u-Rehman, Registrar at NIT Srinagar, confirmed an investigation to determine any violations of guidelines or policies.

The student involved was sent home early in the morning, while the administration suspended all academic activities, exams, and administrative work on November 29.

The situation drew police attention, with the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir zone, V K Birdi, acknowledging a registered case against protesting students and a commitment to take action post-investigation.
