Relatives of a Volleyball player, who died on 24 July, have alleged that it was the negligence of the doctor, Ajaz Khan at PHC Qaimoh that led to the patient’s death.
The patient, a 42-year-old man, who died at his home on Friday, was a School Bus Driver. He was admitted to the Qaimoh Kulgam PHC Hospital due to pain-related complications.
“The patient, Akhtar Hussain Mottu, felt chest pain after he played volleyball at evening time around 7:30 p.m. He was shifted to Public Health Center (PHC), Qaimoh at around 9:30 p.m., where doctor Ajaz Khan was on duty. The doctor did not perform any tests whether a blood test or ECG,” Shabir Ahmad, brother-in-law of the deceased told The Kashmiryat.
The attendant of the patient, Suhail Ahmad Khanday, was accompanied by the patient’s wife and daughter. He asked the doctor to admit the patient but the doctor argued that he knew his profession.
“The doctor prescribed painkillers and some medicines and discharged the patient from the hospital around 11 p.m.,” he said, adding that they still had the doctor’s prescription with them.
“Late night, when Akhtar Hussain Mottu went to bed to sleep, he felt severe pain in the chest due to the medicine prescribed by the doctor. The next morning, when he woke up, the family was discussing shifting him to sub-district hospital Anantnag. After few moments, he fainted downstairs while putting on socks,” he added.
He said that they shifted him to district hospital, Anantnag but he was already dead.
However, when The Kashmiriyat contacted Dr Ajaz Ahmad Khan, he denied the negligence in the patient care.

“The patient died due to a heart attack. The family is changing the statement every other day. I don’t know what they want to gain from the scenario,” he said.
He also said that the patient came to him like any other patient and told him that he had pain in his right shoulder due to playing volleyball during the day. So he treated the patient accordingly.
“Moreover, the staff witnessed the scenario,” he added.
The Kashmiriyat contacted the Block Medical Officer, Abdul Gani, who said, “We had already selected a team and had initiated an enquiry into it. Till now, the negligence of the doctor had not been proved. He also denied the chest pain of the patient and acknowledged the right shoulder pain of the patient.”
“The final report will be out after 3 days,” he added.
