On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that if public health instructions are not followed, the coronavirus crisis will get “worse and worse and worse.”
Tedros statement comes in after WHO reported a daily record of 230,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday.
WHO warned that nothing could go back to normal any time soon till people stuck to physical distancing, handwashing, and wearing masks.
Referring to countries easing lockdowns and experiencing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, Tedros said, “Let me blunt: too many countries are headed in the wrong direction” and that “the virus remains public enemy number one, but the actions of many governments and people do not reflect this.”
Tedros stated that if governments do not implement extensive strategies to prevent COVID-19 transmission and if people did not follow basic public health rules, “there is only one way this pandemic is going to go,” he said.
“It’s going to get worse and worse and worse.”
Tedros while acknowledging that the number of daily deaths due to coronavirus remains relatively stable, said that there were four scenarios playing out around the world: countries that were vigilant and suppressed large outbreaks, those that experienced a large outbreak under control, those that eased pandemic restrictions but are now seeing a resurgence, and those that are in an intense transmission phase.
According to AFP, coronavirus has killed approximately 570,000 people and infected over 12.9 million since the outbreak first emerged.
