
With 106 internet bans across the country in the year 2021, India for the fourth consecutive year has topped the list of countries banning internet to its citizens.
According to a new report released Access Now- a Digital rights advocacy group governments around the gloe have shut the internet at least 182 times in total in 34 countries.
Myanmar imposed the highest total number of shutdowns after India, with 15 disruptions, Sudan and Iran shut the internet five times each, the report adds.
“Over the past five years, our documentation shows that authorities have increasingly moved to disrupt the Internet during events that affect the country’s political situation, such as elections, protests,” the report notes.
In Its report, Access Now also stated that it is possible that the report misses some network disruptions in India due to a lack of “government transparency”.
