Woman dies of alleged anesthesia dose in a private nursing home in Handwara, alleges family

A woman died due to an alleged overdose of anesthesia at a private nursing home in North Kashmir’s Handwara town.

Shameema Akhter, wife of Nazir Ahmed Mir, a resident of Sopernaghama Kralgund was admitted to “North Kashmir Nursing Home” (NKNH) on Monday and was scheduled for surgical removal of gallbladder stone in the late afternoon.

The protesting family told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that the family believes Shameema died due to an overdose of anesthesia administered to her at the nursing home. “We are going to lodge a police complaint against the nursing home,” they said.

The family members staged a massive protest seeking stringent action against the doctors.

They said Shameema died in the nursing home but in order to save their skin, the doctors shifted her to District Hospital Handwara.

Medical Superintendent District Hospital Handwara Dr Nisar Ahmed Wani told KNT that the patient was brought dead in the hospital.

“We got a call from the nursing home wherein the caller stated that there is a critical patient who need to be shifted to the district hospital. We sent an ambulance but found the patient dead on arrival,” Medical Superintendent said.

The owner of the nursing home refused to divulge information about the patient, saying the same can be collected from the police station. (KNT)
