January 22 Intense Clashes have erupted between protesters and government forces erupted in Heff area of Zainapora in South Kashmir’s Shopian district where a brief exchange of gunfire took place between militants and forces. A Local told The Kashmiriyat that on Tuesday morning hundreds of protesters including women assembled and pelted stones on forces who responded to intense tear smoke shelling. Man who Served Shopian Jamia Masjid for 15 Years Passes Away, Demise Widely Condoled

January 21 The former president of Jamia Masjid Shopian, Master Nazir Ahmed Khan breathed his last on Sunday evening after a brief illness. Locals told The Kashmiriyat that Nazir Ahmed Khan who fought for protecting the genuine interests of Jamia Masjid shopian breathed his last yesterday at SKIMS. Many social and religious organizations have expressed grief over his demise. "The deceased was pious and embodiment of many virtues and as such his death has been mourned by a large section of society," Mufti Tariq who is a renowned preacher of Shopian district said. Two Residential Houses Gutted in Shopian Fire Incident

January 21 Two residential houses were gutted in fire incident in Bongam area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Monday morning. Sources told The Kashmiriyat that fire broke out in the house and spread to the nearby houses in the Bongam area. They said that the houses were completely gutted in the fire, the house of one of the neighbors also suffered damage in the incident. Fire tenders with the help of locals brought fire under control. Police has taken cognizance of the issue and said the cause of fire is not known yet.

Another CASO Launched in Shopian Area

January 18 A cordon and search operation has been launched by Government Forces in Shopian District of South Kashmir. Sources told The Kashmiriyat that on Friday, the 44RR of Indian Army and Jammu Kashmir Police jointly launched a search operation in Kashwa in Zainapora area of Shopian.   Following inputs about Militant movement in the area, the forces blocked all the entry and exit points of the area. A door to door search operation had been launched when this report was filed.

January 17 Following a specific input about Militant movement, the Government Forces have jointly launched a cordon and search operation in the Chitragam area of South Kashmir's Shopian District. On Thursday afternoon, the forces including  44 RR of Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu Kashmir police sealed all the entry and exit points to the Chitragam area.   The troopers reached the area following specific inputs about Militant movement in the area. A search operation was going on when this report was being filed. (The Kashmiriyat).

At least 20 Militants Appear in Shopian Village, Offer Gun salute to Zeenat ul Islam

January 16 Panic gripped Sugan area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Wednesday as massive firing was heard in the area. Locals told The Kashmiriyat that a group of at least 20 armed Militants appeared in Sugan on the Chauhram of slain Zeenat ul Islam and offered gun salute to the slain commander. The Militants appeared in the Sugan village of Shopian on Wednesday afternoon and fired several rounds in the air as a mark of respect to Zeenat ul Islam. Meanwhile hundreds of people visited the houses of slain militants on their Chauhram. Zeenat ul Islam and his colleague Shakeel Ahmed Dar were killed in an encounter with Government Forces in Kulgam district  on Saturday night. Police officials however said that they had no information about any incident as such.

January 14 The South Kashmir districts of Kulgam and Shopian are observing a complete shutdown against the killing of two Militants in Kulgam. ALSO READ: From One of the Richest Families in Shopian, Shakeel Slain in Kulgam Encounter Sources informed The Kashmiriyat that people in large numbers are visiting the houses of slain Militants in Sugan area of Shopian.   Meanwhile shops and other business establishments are shut in the area, while the roads are wearing a deserted look. Zeenat ul Islam and his associate were killed in an encounter with Government Forces on Saturday evening in Kulgam district.

Body of Zeenat ul Islam reaches Home, Area Bursts into Mourning

January 13 As the body of Militant commander, Zeenat ul Islam reached his native in Ustadpora rea of Sugan in South Kashmir's Shopian, people stormed out on the streets amid mourning and sloganeering in utter disbelief. In mid- 2017,  the Indian Army had prepared a list of 12- Most wanted Militants and one of them was considered to be relatively dangerous, as he was an IED expert.The Militant was Sugan's dearest  boy, Zeenat ul Islam.
